A harrowing experience with type A influenza: My lost New Year’s holiday

This winter, I battled a severe case of type A influenza that’s currently widespread in Korea. Let me tell you, it was a brutal experience.

The outbreak seems particularly severe in East Asia, including Korea, China, and Japan. It feels like a pandemic all over again, in the wake of COVID-19. If you live in Korea or plan to visit, wearing a mask is highly recommended.

While I didn’t get officially tested at a hospital, my symptoms strongly suggest it was type A influenza. I was simply too sick to even consider going to a hospital. Besides, hospitals were overflowing with flu and cold patients, making it nearly impossible to see a doctor.

A influenza’s Early Symptoms

It started on December 30th with typical cold-like symptoms: a mild fever and a slightly sore throat. I took some ibuprofen, thinking I’d be fine after a good night’s sleep.

Three Days of High Fever

However, the next day, a high fever hit me like a truck. I was completely overwhelmed by fever, chills, and headaches. Ibuprofen helped a little, but the relentless coughing made it impossible to rest.

Although I didn’t have a runny nose, the sore throat and severe cough were debilitating. The high fever kept me bedridden for days.

This agonizing cycle continued for three days straight – the 30th, 31st, and 1st of January. My New Year’s holiday vanished in a haze of fever and misery.

The Fever Breaks, But the Cough Lingers

After three days, the fever finally subsided, but then the coughing intensified. Exhausted but unable to sleep due to the persistent cough, I was miserable. (Thankfully, I didn’t have much phlegm.)

Though I could move around the house a bit, the sore throat made it difficult to eat. I finally managed to visit a local clinic to get some medicine. Even though I chose a clinic that isn’t usually crowded with children, the waiting room was packed, confirming the severity of this flu outbreak.

Recovery

About two days after the fever broke, I started to feel somewhat human again. The cough and sore throat gradually improved, allowing me to finally get some sleep. After about a week, I felt like I was finally on the mend.

A influenza’s Reflection

This strain of influenza is incredibly potent. Those three days of high fever were an ordeal, even for a healthy adult like myself. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for the elderly and vulnerable.

This experience has convinced me to get a flu shot in the future. I’ll also be wearing masks more diligently. And if anyone in my household gets sick, I’ll definitely implement self-quarantine. This flu seems highly contagious.

Please take precautions and stay safe. If you experience any cold or flu symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. Once the high fever sets in, it becomes incredibly difficult to even leave the house. Prevention is key!
