Over the holiday break, I decided to check out Netflix’s “Running Point” (originally titled the same). With 10 episodes spanning three days, it seemed like a manageable and potentially enjoyable watch.
My reason for choosing “Running Point” was its blend of sports, drama, and comedy. I was hoping for something akin to the heartwarming “Ted Lasso” or the compelling “Stove League.”
It seems Netflix Korea opted for the title “아웃사이더는 오늘도 달린다” (Outsider Runs Today) to perhaps grab more attention. Considering it’s a basketball sports drama, the change is understandable.

“Running Point” Storyline
In a nutshell, the show revolves around a wealthy family that owns the LA Waves professional basketball team. When the eldest sibling and team owner faces trouble, the spotlight shifts to the often-overlooked female protagonist, who takes charge as the new owner. This sets the stage for a story of family dynamics and personal growth.
The Cast of “Running Point”
Kate Hudson stars as Isla, the protagonist. The performances are solid, with familiar faces popping up throughout the series. It took me a while to place Kate Hudson, eventually resorting to a quick search.
“Running Point”: Something’s Missing
While billed as a sports drama, basketball takes a backseat to the family’s internal struggles. It feels more like a family drama with a sports backdrop. And though it’s classified as a comedy, it doesn’t deliver laugh-out-loud moments.
In essence, the show juggles multiple genres but falls short in each. The sports aspect lacks genuine excitement, and the comedy doesn’t quite hit the mark.
It’s difficult to wholeheartedly recommend or discourage watching “Running Point.” There’s a decent blend of family dynamics and comedic elements, making it a comfortable watch.
The ending clearly hints at a potential second season, contingent on audience reception.
A surprising element was the inclusion of a Korean “doljanchi” (first birthday) celebration. Seeing characters naturally wearing Hanbok highlights the growing global recognition of Korean culture.
